Compuware Helps Accelerate Development, Improve Application Quality With New Versions of DevPartner Products for Microsoft Visual Studio 2005
Compuware DevPartner Studio 8.0 and Fault Simulator 1.5 Introduce New Performance Expert Feature and Code Coverage Capabilities
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Compuware Corporation (Nasdaq: CPWR) today announced at the launch event for Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 (booth #14) new versions of two of its DevPartner products, Compuware DevPartner Studio 8.0 and Compuware DevPartner Fault Simulator 1.5. These new releases offer full integration with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, enabling development teams to find and fix defects early in the life cycle, institutionalize best practices for improved quality and maximize developer productivity through expert development advice.
"DevPartner Studio 8.0 and DevPartner Fault Simulator 1.5 are a great complement to Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team System," said Rick LaPlante, general manager of Visual Studio 2005 Team System at Microsoft Corp. "Compuware's integration of its DevPartner products with Visual Studio 2005 Team System helps development teams efficiently deliver high-quality, production-ready applications, and deploy with confidence across the application development life cycle."
Compuware DevPartner Studio 8.0 Professional Edition
DevPartner Studio 8.0 now offers full integration with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, helping developers build reliable, high-performance applications, components and web services. Also new in DevPartner Studio 8.0 is Performance Expert, which adds a new dimension to DevPartner's performance analysis capabilities by providing developers with a more holistic view of application performance, greatly enhancing their ability to locate, diagnose and correct performance issues for applications that are not CPU-bound.
DevPartner Studio 8.0 also includes the new DevPartner Fault Simulator SE, which provides fault simulation capabilities that make debugging error- handling code a simple extension to the developer's current debugging technique. DevPartner also includes a new tool that allows developers to compare system-level settings of an application over time, to pinpoint defects due to settings. DevPartner also includes a new data-export facility that allows users to save detailed performance and coverage data in XML format, which can be accessed and used by a variety of tools outside of DevPartner Studio.
"DevPartner Studio 8.0 and Fault Simulator 1.5 seamlessly integrate into Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, making diagnosing problems a breeze," said beta tester, Thomas Testi, a software entrepreneur in Oklahoma. "With DevPartner Studio 8.0 and Fault Simulator 1.5, I've learned best practices and methods that enabled me to streamline functions and procedures as well as find memory leaks and simulate faults in my application. By diagnosing problems early, I was able to find and fix problems faster."
"According to Forrester Research, most development shops understand that the cost of repairing a defect increases exponentially as the application proceeds through the life cycle. But fewer shops know what they can do to identify defects early on. To improve the quality of their code even before formal testing begins, developers can perform unit testing, static analysis, performance analysis and security testing. Full-featured integrated development environments (IDEs) include much -- but not all -- of the functionality that developers will need to accomplish these tasks.(i)"
Compuware DevPartner Fault Simulator 1.5
Compuware's powerful testing tool, DevPartner Fault Simulator, enables developers to quickly locate software defects in error handling code by simulating errors and monitoring the response in both .NET Framework-based and native Windows applications. Because it simulates errors, DevPartner Fault Simulator does not interfere with the developer's debugging tools, and facilitates quick resolution of defects. In addition, QA engineers can simulate real-world production failure scenarios and then provide results to developers for diagnosis. DevPartner Fault Simulator 1.5 now includes integration with the code coverage analysis tool in DevPartner Studio, enabling metrics that ensure new error handlers are tested as they are added to the application.
"Compuware quality solutions help organizations find problems as early in the development cycle as possible, where problems are less costly to repair," said Bob Barker, Vice President of Strategic Planning at Compuware Corporation. "DevPartner Studio and DevPartner Fault Simulator are key tools in a product family that enables developers to improve application quality across many dimensions, including performance, availability and security for Java, Microsoft .NET and legacy Microsoft technologies."
DevPartner Studio 8.0 and DevPartner Fault Simulator 1.5 are just the first of many Compuware products planned to support Visual Studio 2005 and Visual Studio 2005 Team System. During the launch event for Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, Compuware will demonstrate the integration of Compuware TestPartner's functional and regression testing capabilities into Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team System. This integration enables developers and testers to work collaboratively to resolve software defects early in the software life cycle, reducing software development costs while improving application quality. The next version of TestPartner is scheduled to launch in Spring 2006. In early 2006, Compuware also will release the next version of its security analysis tool, DevPartner SecurityChecker, which will support and integrate with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005.
DevPartner Studio 8.0 Professional Edition and Fault Simulator 1.5 will be generally available on November 14, 2005. DevPartner 8.0 will be available at a U.S. list price of $2,300 per seat. DevPartner Fault Simulator 1.5 will be available at a U.S. list price of $6,000 per concurrent user. Volume discounts are available for both products.

Magic Quadrant for Application Quality Ecosystem, 2005: Leaders and Challengers
Compuware was named as one of the two leaders in the Application Quality Market by Gartner. From the report:
During the past 12 months, Compuware emerged from a long slumber and consistently made the shortlists of companies evaluating application quality ecosystem vendors (see "Vendor Rating Update: Compuware in Transition"). Its Compuware Application Reliability Solution (CARS) offering — the first on the market to deliver a combination of people, process and products — gave companies a strong reason to evaluate and investigate Compuware. During 2004, Compuware demonstrated competency in its approach to, and understanding of, the application quality ecosystem. The strategic acquisition of Changepoint places it squarely in line with the trend of aligning IT with the business. In addition, Compuware, once a "go it alone" vendor, is now actively partnering with Microsoft (and actively supporting .NET), SAP, Spherion and Sogeti.
Compuware displays many aspects that Gartner requires in a thought leader. In 2004, the company introduced to the market the concept of risk-based testing, focused on metrics for the alignment of IT and business. Compuware is also delivering a message about the importance of creating an ecosystem.
Compuware is in the midst of a transition from mainframe vendor to a modern application life cycle vendor. In the process of evolving, it must retain one of its most-important strengths: a focus on customer satisfaction. Compuware will be challenged to continue adding value to its mainframe solutions while building a loyal customer base in the distributed market. The company's experienced executive staff will assist in reaching this goal. Compuware's founder, chairman of the board and CEO has been at the helm of the company since its inception in 1973 and has weathered industry and corporate changes. Its COO has been a CIO and has firsthand experience in customers' issues. Watch Compuware's quality assurance initiatives through year-end 2005 to gain insight into some of the larger problems IT encounters with respect to delivering quality applications.
Strengths
- Comprehensive product line on multiple platforms
- Executive staff
- Customer satisfaction
Weaknesses
- Company size reduces its ability to quickly institute change
- Revenue primarily from mainframe products
- Corporate strategy must filter to the field
